Vegetable/Fruit Garden - what to grow?

Edwina Fu: Check out the boxwoods that work for your zone. I personally like the wavy leaf ligustrum don't know if they would work in your area.

Clinton Migliori: What zone are you in? If you are in a northern state, for fruits, start with apples in your orchard. Peaches do not produce if it gets to minus 10 below farenheit. Apricots bloom too early and get froze out. Pears may be ok, need two. European plums (Stanlely, Mt Royal bloom later than the Japanese (Santa Rosa), and are more successful (only need one European, need two Japanese).Tomatoes are the most popular garden vegetable. Beans, cukes, corn, etc are popular....Show more

Misty Vagle: Fruits have seeds; "vegetable" is a non-scientific word for cultivated edibles

Brian Freedland: I'm looking to plant grass in a small patch of land near my condo's deck. It is currently a lot of gravel. I would like to remove some of the gravel, but also just put down new topsoil. How many bags will I ne! ed for my 62 square foot piece of land?

Marcel Then: Go to your local greenhouse and walk around, they ought to have a shaded shrub section. Any good greenhouse'll have someone to help you find the best shrubs for you.

Teodoro Lamond: Permethrin is used and maggot traps are used. Gosh pesticides on a fruit tree are tricky so its best to let a university paper explain it to you.http://www.uri.edu/ce/factsheets/sheets/fruitspray...

Willetta Munhall: I spray against apple black spot in the spring with Fungus fighter. I have only 3 small trees so i could spray if necessary if I knew what to use and when.

Lynn Mctier: er, ah, yea, what Adamantiumknight said!!!!!!!!!!!

David Boehler: ofcourse vegetable

Melissa Lavallie: It is a waste of time to grow anything you don't like to eat. That said, Lettuces, beans, tomatoes, and the squash family are fairly good starter veggies. Radishes and onions, too. Start out with 4 varieties or so so that the g! arden is fun and not overwhelming, and keep a journal. It will! be helpfull next year!

Fritz Sisomphou: I would like approx 3" of topsoil... and I guess the average bag is about 40 pounds...

Deangelo Marchak: I have a decent side space that I need to fill with inexpensive, fast growing shrubs of some kind. It doesn't matter if they flower, I just want them to be green during summer time! This is for Connecticut also! Thanks a million!!!

Stanton Degregorio: I strictly grow Vegetables, including; Onions, Beets, Cabbage, Potatoes, Okra, Squash, Tomatoes, Cucumbers, Green Beans, Hot Peppers, Bell Peppers, Carrots, English Peas, Black eyed Peas and Radishes. I also have an Asparagus Bed. Good luck to you and your Dad. Gardening such good exercise and tremendous therapy for one's mind, heart and soul.

Sonya Volcko: It really depends on where you are. Personally, I LOVE fresh tomatoes from the garden. They taste a world of difference from the tasteless crud in the grocery store. Other staples for me are herbs: Lots of ! basil, oregano, and rosemary. Mint (in a separate container or they'll run over everything). Cilantro and carrots are delicious as well. Pumpkins and squash are fun, too.I've tried strawberries and leaf lettuce but rabbits, snails and birds like them too much. If you can keep them away, they are easy to grow.Check a gardening book and see what grows in your area. The US has their growing seasons in bands - check if you are in 6,7, or 8 and plant accordingly. If you can chicken wire over the garden to keep birds away, you'll benefit even more. I've had some luck with rubber snakes. Move them around occasionally so the birds don't catch on....Show more

Lady Laflin: It depends on the size, the kind of soil, how sunny is your garden. Why not try to grow something that you like to eat to start with? Courgette, tomatos, runner beans are easy enough.

Clifford Riggleman: u can start with guava trees, mango etc. vegetables include curry leaves.

Leora Klingelhoets: *A! nd any tips too, thanks!!!

Ismael Sixon: I'd guess about 40 . Fi! guring the avg bag is ~ 1.5 sq. ft x 3" high . Depends on the composition of the particular mix, & how it fluffs up .

Spencer Heidtbrink: enough to cover it

Lou Rought: A tomato plant. If you get a cherry tomato, only get one plant. For large tomatos get like 3 plants tops! Big boy is a good kind, or Early Girl. And cage your tomato, its easier than staking a plant. Then you could try one hill of BUSH zuchinni. get the bush kind, it doesn't vine all over the place and pci the zukes when they are about the size of a small cucumber and they should keep coming. If you try a pepper plant or two keep them away from your tomatos. Peppers dont like fertilizer, tomatos do. Onions are easy from onion sets if you can find a dozen or so instead of a bag of 100. Who needs that many oinons? From seed, carrots, radishes, green beans, wax beans, pole beans, just follow package directions. If you don't use all the seed it should still be good next year if kept warm and dry.T! hings to avoid, potatos, they are so buggy it will turn you off and cheap enough to buy. Asparagus, it will take over and keep coming back for years. Rhubarb, same thing. Melons and pumpkins, the vines need too much room, leave that stuff to the farmer. Good luck.EDIT: For an almost maintenance free garden that is water saving, take a dark plastic trash bag and carefully cut it down both sides at the crease, then lay it out on the prepared soil like a sheet on a bed. use a few rocks to hold it down then tuck in all sides into the dirt and toss a little dirt on top to keep the plastic there. This will stop weeds from growing, keep the soil warm and moisture in. Use a blowtorch turned down low, one of those propane things, and barely touch the plastic where you want a little hole to plant your plant. After planting mulch over the plastic with a little straw of even lawn clippings. Now when you water all you have to water is the hole where the plant is and it saves water. Just! water it and make sure it gets enough then walk away. No weeing, well ! a little maybe at the hole....Show more

Jesusita Dykhoff: Peony

Samatha Nicar: call your County Extension carrier or community grasp Gardeners... the two are unfastened centers... for their suggestion to your section and be confident to tell them what variety of tree(s) you prefer to plant under. some timber are very shallow rooted, which skill their roots compete with grass and the grass merely won't strengthen. if it is the case, pass with a floor cover as a replace. finished colour is the place there is not any direct solar at any component of the day; partial colour is the place there is a few direct solar. in case you have finished colour, you additionally can could desire to apply a floor cover. in case you detect your backyard's section can assist grass, your climate, soil form (clay, loam, sandy) will partially dictate the suited form. additionally, shady spots are the two dry or tend to be damp... the dry circumstance is easily greater advantageous for ! grass than the damp circumstance when you consider which you are able to continuously upload water, in spite of the fact that it is not rather basic to take it away. Fungal issues in shaded aspects, like damping off in vegetation, can kill grass seedlings as a results of fact there is too a lot moisture. coaching for seeding or sodding is often substantial & makes each and all the variation interior the consequence. you are able to lease a roto tiller to loosen the soil, then upload screened precise soil and diatomaceous earth (golfing courses & specialists use this) to advance drainage and/or hold water, as necessary. continuously upload lime to sweeten the soil, whether you're merely over-seeding. some weeks after seedlings sprout, upload a sluggish-launch backyard fertilizer. beginning grass from seed interior the colour is complicated, yet no longer no longer possible. sturdy success!...Show more

Anton Waln: I agree with all. I started with tomatoes, cucumbers, zu! cchini, beans and peppers. I planted more herbs this year like thyme, d! ill, oregano, and basil. Just a hint planting certain herbs by vegestables are great way to keep certain bad bugs away and bring in good bugs that help your garden. Try a couple Bee Balms too. Happy Gardening

Chi Alfero: It depends how deep you want it, and the size of the bags. That would be the way to calculate it.

Rufus Plough: i use a mixture of topsoil and compost. use enough to cover the area with at least 6 inches of dirt.

Bell Pasco: We just started our garden too. We got some black bean seeds and they are growing like crazy. Tomatoes sound pretty easy. Be careful on any leafy veggie, the squirrels love those!Make sure all are well watered, cover if there is frost in the forecast....read the back of the seed package. That will at least get you started. I'm sure the web has a lot to offer once you decide what you want to plant.

Amina Motzer: Most folks start with tomatoes, beans, cucumbers, watermelon, squash.

Penelope Armond: both are ! roughly the same except when it comes to protein. EVERY veggies include a good amount of protein; fresh fruit does not.

Eli Trapeni: You are going to need 15 1/2 Cu. Ft. of soil to spread out 3' thick by 62 Sq Ft which is about 21-22 40lbs bags. If you have a truck, it would probably be cheaper if you picked it up from a landscape yard. You could probably get a cubic yard (27 Cu Ft) for close to the same price which will give you 5" thick on 62 Sq Ft. I suggest you shop around for the best deal. hope this helps.
