important things to maintenance on an older car?

Janean Guz: The two most expensive things to replace are the engine and transmission so start there. Obviously change the oil and filter, but also change the fluid and filter in the transmission if its an automatic. If its a manual change the fluid in it when recommend. The antifreeze/coolant breaks down and should be changed on a regular basis, maybe every 2 years or so. The brake fluid that almost no one ever changes should be changed especially on a very old car because it may be original fluid. If the car has grease fittings on the front end parts, grease them well and wipe the excess off with a towel. Also if its a rear wheel drive car don't forget the differential has gear oil in it also that should be changed. If the car has drum brakes, they should be clean and adjusted once in a while to keep the parking brake tight also. I could go on all day, also don't forget to change the fuel filter, and airfilter. If it has a carburetor get some gum out carb cleaner and gi! ve it a good bath. Theres more depending on just how meticulous you want to get with it....Show more

Janita Tetlow: Just standard maintenance. Regular fluid changes and take care of any slight problems right away so they cannot cause you bigger problems down the road.

Hubert Jestes: Don't forget the battery. Last thing you want is to have everything else running great, but the battery is worn out and can't start the engine.
