Chanda Wittwer: Various spills (Prince William Sound, coast of France) have established that the the materials used for shore side cleanup (detergents, etc.) generally have a worse effect on the environment than the spill itself. The modern practice is to clean up the floating oil, clean up sandy beaches but don't bother with trying to clean up rocky beaches and don't use detergents, which break up the oil but don't clean it up.
