Is fencing a martial art?

Myriam Hetjonk: it used to be same with kendo they are both martial sports that are fairly far removed from their originator while there are some schools/dojos that teach the less sport oriented forms they will always be more rareit is sad really...Show more

Herma Ellebrecht: Western fencing is as much a martial art as kendo. I've done foil, epee, and sabre. I've also tried kendo and did not like it because of all the restrictions and how my western fencing training kept getting me yelled at for illegally thrusting to the face and throat all the time. Both are highly restricted sport martial arts that have deviated from their origins. That deviation is the main reason I quit training in fencing because it was programming some awful habits into my muscle memory....Show more

Dalia Causby: was is kendo considered a martial art but not fencing?

Sharee Doak: why is kendo considered a martial art but not fencing

Catheryn Small: "fencing training ke! pt getting me yelled at for illegally thrusting to the face and throat all the time."I think throat strikes are legal in kendo. They probably don't want you doing it as a beginner or in training, because it is dangerous. It's like jousting. Sure, the lances are blunted and you wear tournament armor, but people still die from freak accidents like the lance impaling their helmet and going through the eye. Then again, I can do the same thing with my body in crushing the throat, so I already know the safety concerns. But for beginner students of kendo, that's not likely. Thus the instructors will be strict, for the purpose of safety.Martial simply refers to all things of war and combat. Art is different from science in that it differs from human to human in application and consequences. So anything involving a sword or a lance is a martial art but whether dojos or schools teach it with such purpose in mind, is another thing entirely.Iaido and kenjutsu differs from kendo in that i! t is not designed for competition or sportcraft. Those who wis! h to emulate Musashi's way of the warrior would be far more interested in Iaido and kenjutsu than kendo.EDIT: Kendo is explicitly taught as a NON-Combat form, precisely because police and such used it during the Meiji Era to get rid of all the samurai toting shinken around. Given that they made carrying a sword illegal to force Westernization upon Japan. The instructors for Kendo also explictly state that Kendo is not about defeating your opponent, but perfecting your own mind and body. That is not combat. That is not even road rage, let alone dropping bombs on Hiroshima. That would be combat....Show more

Russel Gajate: No your thinking of Kendo

Nia Monopoli: Whatever floats your boat, really two different things though. So I don't really see where you're going with it. Its like saying Olympic butterfly sucks. Combat swimming rules. two different things, two different uses. (have never heard about anyone taking up modern fencing to protect them self)

Aubrey ! Tirri: First of all, when we take apart the words "martial arts", we get the phrase "Arts of Mars" or "Arts of Warcraft", (Mars being the Roman god of war). Martial arts is a term given to various combat styles; around the 14th - 15th century (I think) the term martial art referred to Old European fencing. So, fencing, also being a type of systematized fighting, is a martial art.The term martial arts now popularly refers to East Asian martial arts - Kung Fu, Karate, Tae Kwon Do, etc., due to the amounts of kung fu flicks and stuff coming out on theater. Automatically hearing the Japanese (being Asian) word "Kendo", we assume that Kendo is a martial art, which it is.Kendo and fencing are both martial arts.Generally speaking, martial arts is any type of systematized forms of combat....Show more

Elsie Resner: A martial art is a system of combat. If sport-oriented stuff like Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu and Tae Kwon Do can be considered martial arts, then so can Fencing. It fits th! e definition of what a martial art is. Much like amateur wrestling, it ! just doesn't have the "Mysticism" behind it.People are just used to thinking that martial arts are what you see in kung fu flicks."What? I thought you knew how to use martial art weapons. Where are your nunchucks?"...Show more
